
General Laborer - Union
Tacoma, WA
Job Summary:
A union laborer performs a variety of tasks to assist in the construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings, roads, bridges, and other structures. They work under the direction of skilled tradespeople, site supervisors, or foremen while adhering to union guidelines and workplace safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in site preparation, including clearing debris and setting up work areas.\
- Load, unload, and transport construction materials and tools.
- Dig trenches, backfill excavations, and compact earth for foundations.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, and light equipment as required.
- Mix, pour, and spread concrete, asphalt, or other construction materials.
- Support carpenters, masons, and other tradespeople with their tasks.
- Follow all safety guidelines, wear personal protective equipment (PPE), and participate in safety meetings.
- Maintain and clean job sites to ensure a safe working environment.
- Erect and dismantle scaffolding, ladders, and temporary structures.
- Perform basic demolition work when necessary.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED (preferred but not always required).
- Previous experience in construction or general labor (a plus).
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
- Membership in a labor union (or willingness to join).
- Valid driver’s license (may be required for some positions).
Work Environment:
- Exposure to loud noises, dust, and heavy machinery.
- Work in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow).
- Requires physical endurance, lifting, bending, and standing for long periods.
